request an appointmentWhat are bunions?
Bunions develop when the bones at the front part of your foot shift. This pushes the big toe in toward your smaller toes. As a result, the big toe joint juts out.
Usually, you’ll notice a bunion at the joint of the big toe, but it can sometimes start at the base of the little toe. Bunions on the pinky toe edge of your foot are called bunionettes.
Why did I develop a bunion?
Bunions are not strictly caused by high heels or tight shoes, though making these footwear choices can contribute to their development.
Usually bunions form due to:
- Foot deformities
- Genetics
- Medical conditions like rheumatoid arthritis
- Foot stress
If you notice a bunion forming, it’s important to reach out to Dr. Dozier at PREMIER PODIATRY, INC. She can help recommend lifestyle modifications to slow its growth and minimize its impact on your daily life.
What are the symptoms of bunions?
One of the first signs of a bunion is a bump on the big toe side of the foot.
In addition to the bump, you may notice:
- Swelling or redness around your big toe joint
- Noticeable pain that comes and goes
- Soreness
- Calluses and/or corns
Over time, you may lose the ability to bend and straighten your big toe. The bigger your bunion gets, the more pain you’ll experience. It may even become difficult to walk.
What treatments are available for bunions?
Bunions don’t resolve on their own. If your bunion is in an early stage, Dr. Dozier will help you with protective padding to reduce friction against your shoes, removal of any corns and calluses, and shoe recommendations to accommodate the bump.
You’ll also benefit from orthotic devices to help stabilize your foot and physical therapy exercises that help you maintain joint mobility and prevent stiffness or arthritis. Dr. Dozier may also provide you with a splint for nighttime wear that helps align your joint correctly.
When your bunion is causing unbearable pain and dysfunction, Dr. Dozier may recommend surgery to remove the bunion and realign the toe.
